Fine Art led the year with outstanding performances by internationally celebrated artists. Our Modern + Contemporary Fine Art auctions achieved particularly strong results, including Marc Chagall’s Le dimanche (Sunday) (circa 1939), which realized $277,200, followed closely by L’Hiver: Procession de Noël – Les Quatre Saisons (1974) at $220,500. Another major highlight was Raimonds Staprans’ The Mid Summer Drop-Leaf Table (1993), which sold for $189,000, underscoring continued demand for postwar and contemporary masters.

Furniture & Decorative Arts

Furniture & Decorative Arts also enjoyed a banner year, with exceptional objects achieving impressive prices. Leading the category was a rare D’Angelico New York “New Yorker” Guitar, which brought $48,000, followed by an impressive pair of Sèvres-style porcelain gilt bronze mounted covered urns, selling for $44,100. A Larson Brothers Prairie State guitar rounded out the top results at $40,950, reflecting sustained collector enthusiasm for fine craftsmanship and design.

Fine Jewelry & Watches

In Jewelry, standout jewels and signed pieces commanded strong interest throughout the year. The top result was a spectacular Colombian emerald, seed pearl, diamond, and 18k gold necklace, which achieved $59,850. A diamond and platinum solitaire ring followed at $40,950, while a Tiffany & Co. Belle Époque natural saltwater pearl and diamond brooch realized $21,420, highlighting the enduring appeal of exceptional gemstones and historic design.

Asian Art

Asian Art proved to be another area of strength in 2025. Leading the category was a rare Chinese yellow-ground blue and white handled vase, which sold for $72,450. A lot of 10 Chinese famille rose bowls achieved $39,300, and a striking set of twelve Chinese 24k gold zodiac animal figures realized $37,800, reflecting continued international demand for fine Asian works of art.

A particularly noteworthy moment of the year was the presentation of Property from the Estate of Senator Dianne Feinstein, a landmark collection that drew worldwide attention to Clars Auctions. The sale generated strong national and international interest, affirming Clars’ expertise in stewarding historically significant estates and presenting them to a global audience with care, scholarship, and distinction.

One of the headline lots is a seasonally fitting screenprint by Pop Art icon Andy Warhol, titled The Witch (1981), featuring American actress Margaret Hamilton in her role as the Wicked Witch of the West from the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. Part of Warhol’s Myths series, this screenprint embodies the artist’s fascination with American pop culture icons, with other works in the series depicting figures like Superman, Dracula, and Santa Claus. Though created nearly twenty years after his famed 1960s portraits, The Witch recalls the vibrant neon palette and strong visual contrasts of Warhol’s earlier pieces, particularly Marilyn Diptych. The addition of hand-drawn lines and the use of Warhol’s own photography make this piece a dynamic and layered work, carrying an estimate of $30,000–$50,000.

Another standout in the art category is Nude Series #2 by Vietnamese artist Tran Luu Hau (1928–2020), known for his bold brushwork and abstracted forms. Also featured is a serene oil on canvas landscape by California painter Ray Strong (1905–2006), a key figure in the Works Progress Administration art movement of the 1930s. Strong’s work frequently captures the unique beauty of the California landscape, and the untitled painting offered in this auction appears to depict a view from Mount Tamalpais toward the Pacific Ocean. Golden hills dotted with greenery stretch toward a slate-blue sea partially obscured by low cloud cover, with the coastal town of Bolinas visible in the distance. Clars’ Asian Art department will present a distinguished collection of Chinese works of art, with highlights including three Chinese famille rose and blue-and-white “lotus” bowls — two bearing Guangxu marks and one with a Xuantong mark, all of the period. The Xuantong reign (1909–1911), under the last emperor Puyi, represents the final chapter of China’s Qing Dynasty. These bowls are finely potted with flared rims and deep rounded sides, decorated with underglaze blue lotus scrolls on the interiors and vibrant famille rose lotus pond scenes on the exteriors. Their refined enamels and luminous cobalt blue glazes exemplify the technical sophistication of the late Qing imperial kilns.

Also featured is a pair of Chinese clair-de-lune glazed covered weiqi jars, prized for their balanced proportions and rich sky-blue glaze. Traditionally used to store game pieces for Go, these jars symbolize literati ideals of intellect and aesthetic refinement. The image shows the baths at their height, filled with swimmers and illuminated by sunlight pouring through the grand glass ceiling. We are honored to present the rare and globally sourced bead and tribal art collection from the estate of Naomi Lindstrom, coming to auction on Thursday, August 14th at 1 PM PDT.

Naomi Lindstrom (1924–2014) was a beloved and highly respected figure in the bead and tribal art world. Over four decades as a Pan Am flight attendant — beginning in the 1950s and continuing through the early 1990s — Naomi traveled extensively, cultivating a keen eye for extraordinary objects. Her global journeys laid the foundation for what would become one of the most exceptional private bead collections of the 20th century. Among the highlights of the upcoming auction are two exceptional Tibetan red coral necklaces, considered among the finest examples ever to reach the open market. The first is composed of 41 vibrant red coral beads totaling an impressive 368 grams, accented with finely crafted Chinese gilt silver discs. The second necklace features 63 equally radiant red coral beads, weighing approximately 140 grams.

Another standout among the top lots is Boats in the Harbor (Seascape), a 1964 oil on canvas by Sri Lankan artist Senaka Senanayake (b. 1951), carrying an estimate of $15,000–$25,000. Also featured is Arizona Landscape, a 1944 oil on board by Western master Maynard Dixon (American, 1875–1946), estimated at $15,000–$20,000.

Among the highlights in California and American Impressionism is Eucalyptus Trees with Field of Irises, a graceful watercolor by Percy Gray (American, 1869–1952), estimated at $6,000–$9,000. Additional highlights include View from Salmon Creek, an oil on canvas by Emmy Lou Packard (American, 1914–1998), estimated at $5,000–$7,000, and Near the Mouth, an evocative coastal scene by Theodore Wores (American, 1859–1939), estimated at $4,000–$6,000.

The sale also features a strong group of early 20th-century California works, including Cliff and Sunset, both circa 1920 by Karl Schmidt (American, 1890–1962). These vertical oil on linen paintings, each measuring 28 x 13 inches, are estimated at $2,000–$4,000. The Jewelry Department will offer a dazzling collection of fine jewelry and luxury timepieces. Highlights include a rare Cartier France brooch featuring ruby, diamond, frosted rock crystal, and 18k gold, estimated at $2,000–$3,000. A 4.80 carat diamond ring set in 18k white gold is expected to fetch $4,000–$6,000, alongside an elegant 18k gold strap bracelet with a similar estimate. A classic 18k gold pendant will also be offered, estimated at $300–$500.

Asian Art

The Asian Art department will present a remarkable collection anchored by a superb Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover from the Qianlong period. Finely carved with a garden scene of songbirds and peony blossoms, and featuring the Eight Buddhist Emblems around its sides, this piece is estimated at $8,000–$12,000.

Another major highlight is an 18th-century Tibetan thangka depicting Vajrabhairava, also known as Yamantaka, revered in Tibetan Buddhism as the destroyer of death. Additional highlights include a Chinese blue and white jar from the Kangxi period, estimated at $3,000–$5,000, and a Chinese huanghuali seal chest from the Qing dynasty, also estimated at $3,000–$5,000.
