This November 21st starting 10 AM PST at our Fine Art Collectors Auction, we are thrilled to showcase an exceptional array of artwork, ranging from American folk art to modern abstract masterpieces.

Among our featured pieces are two paintings by renowned American folk artist, Charles Wysocki (American, 1928–2002). Born in Detroit, Wysocki was drafted into the Army, which led him to Los Angeles, where he met his wife, fellow artist Elizabeth G. Lawrence. Inspired by the rural lifestyles surrounding 1960s Los Angeles and the pastoral beauty of New England, Wysocki’s work reflects influences from prominent folk artists of the region. Notably, viewers will notice striking similarities between Wysocki’s landscapes and those of Anna Mary Robertson Moses, or Grandma Moses, known for her nostalgic depictions of New England. A deeper connection also exists with earlier artist Rufus Porter, whose whimsical yet precise portrayals of 19th-century Massachusetts and Connecticut resonate with Wysocki’s style.

In our November auction, we will feature two oil on canvas works titled Martha’s Vineyard and Quiltmakers. Martha’s Vineyard depicts a Massachusetts lighthouse and surrounding buildings in a late fall landscape, showcasing a palette of brown and red grass contrasted with patches of snow. Quiltmakers illustrates a quaint community quilt sale, featuring three vibrant, meticulously detailed quilts hanging on a clothesline. We estimate Martha’s Vineyard will sell for $10,000–$15,000 and Quiltmakers for $6,000–$9,000.

Another highlight of the auction is an oil on canvas painting by Quebec modernist, Paul-Emile Borduas (Canadian, 1905–1960). An artist from a young age, Borduas trained as a church restorer under self-taught artist, Ozias Leduc, and furthered his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. His time in Paris at the Ateliers d’Art Sacré helped him fuse his influences. Upon returning to Canada, Borduas became a pivotal figure in the Montreal art scene and founded the Automatistes, inspired by Surrealist André Breton’s ideas. His 1946 group exhibition was a landmark event in Canadian art history.

Later in his career, Borduas’ work took on a political dimension, as he advocated for the separation of church and state in Quebec, a stance that led to his dismissal from l’École du Meuble. Although he faced challenges during his lifetime, his influence became evident during the Quiet Revolution, culminating in the posthumous success of his painting Figures Schématiques, which sold for $3.6 million CAD in 2018. The untitled painting in our November auction exemplifies Borduas’ style, featuring textured impasto, stark black-and-white contrasts, and abstract forms that invite interpretation of his political and personal themes. This piece is estimated at $25,000–$35,000.

Other highlights this month include a painting by San Francisco Bay Area modernist Ruth Armer (American, 1896–1977), an oil by Texas landscape painter William Slaughter (American, 1923–2003), ceramics by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973), a selection of vintage French advertising posters, and much more.

We are also pleased to present two hyperrealist sculptures by Danish artist, Kurt Trampedach (Danish, 1943–2013). Known for his dark, evocative paintings influenced by Rembrandt and late 19th-century Symbolists, Trampedach often explored his mental states through figurative art. His sculptures, while less abundant, retain the emotional intensity of his paintings. The two pieces in our auction, Annette and Jonas, depict Trampedach’s wife and son, created in the early 1970s from plaster on steel frames. These lifelike figures convey a sense of solemn contemplation. Annette is estimated at $8,000–$12,000, while Jonas is estimated at $4,000–$6,000.

Clars’ Fine Art department is pleased to announce a selection of works from the private collection of the renowned architecture and design firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in our upcoming auction. Among the highlights is a captivating 1962 oil on canvas titled Windswept by Carl Morris (American, 1911–1993), with an estimated value of $6,000– $9,000. This piece, along with others by Morris, has seen increased interest in recent years due to the artist’s significant contributions to mid-century art.

Another standout work from the SOM collection is Pyramid by Alan J. Shields (American, 1944–2005). This piece is a whimsical painted and beaded canvas showcasing Shield’s playful style, estimated at $5,000–$7,000. Additional works by notable artists such as Margo Hoff, Gideon Jacques Denny, and Mark Adams will also be included in the auction.

Asian Art

The Asian Art segment will feature a remarkable group of nine stoneware pieces by Morino Taimei (born 1934), hailing from a private collection. Taimei’s work is represented in esteemed institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Additionally, a rare 18th century Tibetan thangka depicting the Buddha will be offered, providing a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of the region.

Clars is thrilled to present our Important Fall Fine Art Auction on Thursday, September 19th, at 1 PM PDT. This exciting event will feature a diverse selection of remarkable pieces from William Merritt Chase, Pablo Picasso, Yayoi Kusama, and much more.

One of the most exciting pieces up for auction is an exceptional oil on panel painting by renowned American Impressionist, William Merritt Chase (American, 1849–1916). Titled A Mother’s Joy and created in 1889, this piece measures 17″ x 17″ (43.2 x 43.2 cm) and is signed by the artist. It carries an estimated value of $600,000–$900,000 USD. The painting’s provenance includes its acquisition by New Jersey Governor Franklin Murphy from Fifth Avenue Art Galleries in 1891, and it has been exhibited in notable venues such as the Society of American Artists and the Chicago Interstate Industrial Exposition. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from D. Frederick Baker and Ronald G. Pisano, Inc., this painting is a significant highlight of the auction.

Another standout in the auction is a ceramic pitcher by the legendary artist, Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973). Best known for his revolutionary Cubist paintings, Picasso also made significant contributions to ceramic art. This particular pitcher, titled Piquet Gothique aux Oiseaux with estimate of $8,000–$12,000, showcases Picasso’s distinctive style with its simplified painting technique and depiction of three black birds. The pitcher, crafted in 1953, is a testament to Picasso’s prolific work in ceramics, a medium he explored extensively after his initial visit to the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France.

The Important Fall Fine Art Auction will also feature a striking photograph by photographer, Helmut Newton (Australian/German, 1920–2004). Known for his dramatic black-and-white compositions and collaborations with major fashion designers, Newton’s work has been influential in the world of fashion photography. The gelatin silver print offered in this sale, titled Vogue, France, Yves St. Laurent, Paris, captures Yves Saint Laurent’s collection inspired by film noir aesthetics, and exemplifies Newton’s iconic style of high drama and eroticism. This photograph will be offered at $10,000–$15,000.

Several collectable and notable prints will also be offered in the September auction. Among them are two woodblock prints by artist, Gustave Baumann (American/German, 1881–1971), who is celebrated for his revival of the woodblock technique in the U.S. The two available prints, Spring Freshet valued at $5,000–$7,000 and The Sycamore at $6,000–$9,000, both highlight Baumann’s mastery in depicting southwestern U.S. landscapes.

An amazing print by the ever-popular Pop Art icon, Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, b. 1929), will also be up for auction. The screenprint, A Pumpkin BB-C, which reflects her famous pumpkin in vibrant blue, is priced to sell at $20,000–$30,000. This is a must have for any Kusama fan and a perfect piece just in time for fall.

The sale will continue with even more memorable prints including a 1978/79 Untitled etching by Minimalist, Donald Judd (American, 1928–1994), priced at $5,000–$7,000 and two spectacular prints by pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997). Lichtenstein’s famous Crak offset lithograph from 1964 will be on the block at $10,000– $15,000 along with his small edition pencil signed print created for Guild Hall East Hampton at $5,000–$7,000.

From the Pacific Rim and estimated at $15,000–$20,000, Clars will be offering an elegant, yet colorful painting from 1963 by artist, Cheong Soo Pieng (Singaporean, 1917–1983). Heading north, a magnificent, oil on canvas by Contemporary artist, Liao Zhenwu (Chinese, b. 1964), titled The Story of Meditation, will be offered for $5,000–$7,000. Always a favorite among collectors is South Asian artist, Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887–1972). Known for capturing the essence of simplicity in the life of the Indian people, a classic gouache on paper, Untitled (Seated Figure), is another of the many highlights at Clars Auctions on September 19th and will be available for $7,000–$10,000.

The Important Fall Fine Art Auction will have many other notable artists represented. One such artist is S.C. Yuan (Chinese/American, 1911–1974), who is known as one of the foremost painters of the Monterey Peninsula. The two untitled paintings in this month’s sale depict a conversation between two figures, estimated at $3,000–$5,000, and a barn, estimated at $6,000–$9,000. Both showcase the restrained palette preferred by the artist.

Another more contemporary California work on paper by Funk Art pioneer, Roy De Forest (American, 1930–2007), with an auction estimate of $6,000–$9,000, will be offered. De Forest was a major figure in Bay Area modern art during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and he was also a key member of the faculty at U.C. Davis. De Forest taught alongside fellow California icons, including Wayne Thiebaud, William T. Wiley, and Robert Arneson. Alongside this piece we will also be offering a striking work by another California artist, Sam Francis, estimated at $8,000–$12,000.

Clars is also pleased to offer several contemporary works of sculpture which round out our diverse collection this month. Included is a work by Vivian Wang (Chinese, b. 1945) featuring a glass figure of a seated child with a red and black painted hat and outfit with an auction estimate of $3,000–$5,000. Wang began her career as a fashion designer before transitioning to fine art. She is known for glass figural sculptures that pay homage to her Chinese heritage. Another striking piece in this group is a mixed media sculpture by American artist Peter Anton (American, b. 1963) depicting an ice cream bar, valued at $4,000–$6,000. Anton is known for his hyperrealist sculptures of dessert foods. Also included in the sculpture section is an anemone-like glass cube by Wilfried Grootens (German, b. 1954) with an estimate of $3,000–$5,000 as well as a glass mime figure by Martin Janecky (Czech, b. 1980) with an estimate of $4,000–$6,000.

The second highlight is a Chinese four-panel folding screen with porcelain plaque insets by renowned Jingdezhen artist, Zhu Danchen. Crafted in 1994, the screen displays twelve porcelain plaques featuring poetic inscriptions and enameled landscape scenes. This August, Clars is delighted to feature a variety of works by international artists in painting, sculpture, and printmaking. A highlight of the auction is an oil on canvas by Dutch painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, known as the Prince of Landscape Painting. Koekkoek, a prominent figure in Dutch Romanticism, created lush, light-infused landscapes that captivated royalty and influenced later artists. The painting in our auction depicts travelers strolling through a verdant countryside, with natural light casting dramatic pink and golden hues.

Another notable piece is by modern American artist Jane Wilson, known for her expressionist landscapes. Wilson’s work, including the 1955 painting Summer Breakfast, blends elements of expressionism with her Midwestern background. This piece portrays a contemplative scene of two women at breakfast — reflecting the moody, emotive quality characteristic of Wilson’s style.

Also featured is a bronze sculpture by Native American artist, Doug Hyde. Born of Assiniboine, Nez Perce, and Ojibwe heritage, Hyde’s work often draws from indigenous mythology and history. The bronze sculpture, titled Hopi Butterflies, captures a group of women in traditional dress engaged in conversation, showcasing Hyde’s modernized yet respectful interpretation of indigenous subjects.

Fine Asian Art

The auction will include high-quality works of Asian art, including contemporary Chinese ink paintings, a Tibetan black-ground thangka of Vajrabhairava, Chinese cloisonné enamel burners, a pair of Chinese jade and hardstone embellished lacquer panels, various types of fine jades, porcelains, embroidery, and various miscellaneous items.

Leading the lineup is Setting Sail, a hanging scroll, ink, and color on paper from 1977. This late-period work by Zhang Daqian depicts several quaint cottages nestled at the foot of steep mountains, with small boats gradually disappearing into the distance on the sea. Through this painting, Zhang expresses his blessings for his friend’s forthcoming journey and his reluctance to part. This painting comes from Harvey CV Liu, gifted by Zhang just before he moved from Taiwan to San Francisco, California.

Another featured work is the hanging scroll The Scholar by Zhang Daqian — an ink and color on paper which showcases his masterful delineation of character lines and the elegant depiction of figures.

At the same time, we will also present Pu Ru’s fan painting Secluded Dwelling in Autumn Mountains. Pu Ru’s landscape paintings convey an elegant and refined artistic conception, with meticulously structured and vigorous brushwork and subtle layering of colors. In Secluded Dwelling in Autumn Mountains, Pu Ru uses different shades of ink to artfully render forests and cottages, presenting a harmonious composition. This piece was gifted by Pu Ru to a collector’s father.

The Warehouse Auction

The Warehouse auction is offering an extensive and fine private collection of items from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco. The collection includes original glass Novagems, sterling trophies, exhibit items, enamel pins, and watch fobs, as well as Panama Canal memorabilia. Felt pennants, photographs, and presentation articles related to exposition president Charles C Moore, San Francisco mayor James Rolph, Jr., and United States President William Howard Taft, are also available. Clars is excited to present our Important Summer Fine Art Sale on June 20th, commencing at 10 AM PDT. The sale is bursting with exceptional artwork from iconic creators such as Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein and Aaron Douglas.

One of the most exciting pieces in this month’s Important Summer Fine Art Sale is a never-before-sold oil on canvas painting by world-renowned Spanish Surrealist, Salvador Dalí. Over the course of the early to mid-twentieth century, Dalí established himself as perhaps the most celebrated of the Surrealist painters, famous for both his instantly recognizable visual style and for his eccentric personality and antics. The painting in this month’s sale, titled Portrait of Mrs. Luther Greene, is an oil on canvas that was commissioned by the sitter’s husband in New York City in 1942 — the year of the artist’s first retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art.

The portrait depicts the patron seated in the foreground, wrapped in a red robe. Behind her is a classic, Dalíesque desert landscape with two figures standing in the distance. An amorphous hill on the far right is dotted with buildings — resembling a forgotten ghost town — and a small boat sits beached by the shore on the far left. This exemplary piece is accompanied by the preliminary sketches done by the artist in preparation for the painting.

Another noteworthy piece in the sale is a serigraph by American Pop art pioneer, Roy Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein was one of the most prominent figures to come out of the Pop Art movement and is most known for his comic strip-inspired paintings, prints, and sculptures. The print featured in the June sale is titled Reverie and dates to 1965. Pictured is a young woman with blonde hair and a melancholy expression, holding a microphone while a speech bubble over her head reads the lyrics, “The melody haunts my reverie.” This lyric — taken from the song Stardust by Tin Pan Alley musicians Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parish — was written in 1927 and popularized during the 1930s big band era. The retro feel of the imagery is characteristic of Lichtenstein’s work, as is the comic-style dot work, bold color, and thick, black lines. Reverie was created for a portfolio, titled 11 Pop Artists published by Original Editions, that included 2 other prints by the artist as well as prints by Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselman, and other major names in the Pop Art movement.

A third striking highlight in our sale is an oil on canvas painting by key Harlem Renaissance figure, Aaron Douglas. Douglas is widely known for the murals he was commissioned to paint in several high-profile locations. These locations included several Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Harlem YMCA, and one of his most acclaimed works, Aspects of Negro Life, at the New York Public Library in Harlem. Douglas worked with writers Alain Locke and W.E.B. Du Bois, and had illustrations included in publications like Vanity Fair, the NAACP journal The Crisis, and Opportunity: A Journal of Negro Life among others. Douglas developed a distinctive, graphic style that combined the aesthetic exploration of modernism with more traditional African subject matter. He often used bold color and evocative light sources with leafy foliage and human figures in silhouette. These figures are at times depicted in an African village or tribal setting, dancing, holding spears, or traversing a jungle-like landscape.

In other instances, figures are shown in American cityscapes, holding industrial tools with skyscrapers looming in the distance, or playing brass instruments in bands. The work in our June sale shows three silhouetted human figures holding spears and chasing five bison-like animals through an abstracted environment that uses the interplay between color and light to mimic an earthly landscape while remaining nonobjective. Douglas’s approach marries the celebratory aspects of Harlem Renaissance figuration with an Orphism-inspired understanding of color theory that creates a composition in which movement and light become as intrinsic to the material as paint and canvas.

Clars is thrilled to announce their Luxury Jewels and Timepieces Auction on Friday, June 21st, starting at 9:30 AM PDT. This sale will showcase a stunning collection of diamonds, timepieces, antique jewelry and signed pieces.

Highlights in our Friday sale include a diamond and platinum rivière necklace, estimated at $25,000–$30,000; a diamond and platinum tennis bracelet, estimated at $15,000–$20,000; an 18k gold Cartier wristwatch, estimated at $2,500–$3,500; a Chopard diamond and 18k gold ‘Your Hour’ wristwatch, estimated at $4,000–$6,000; an antique aquamarine and 18k gold parure set, estimated at $6,000–$8,000; and a Victorian citrine, diamond, enamel, and gold brooch, estimated at $3,000–$5,000. The Friday sale features modern highlights from design masters such as Isamu Noguchi, Guido Faleschini, Hans Wegner, and Philip and Kelvin LaVerne. Asian Art

The Asian Art department will offer a single-owner collection of Chinese archaic jade and hardstone carvings ranging from bi discs to pendants and cong vessels. The highlight from this collection is a jade ‘dragon’ disc, possibly dated to the Eastern Zhou period (771–256 BCE). Another highlight is a Chinese folding screen inset with sixteen finely decorated underglaze blue porcelain plaques featuring various animals from the Republic period (1911–1949). Rounding out the sale is a sizable collection of Chinese porcelain jars and vases from the Estate of Reynold Tom of Piedmont, California.

The Warehouse Auction

Clars’ Warehouse auction is set to showcase an eclectic range of art, prints, and photographs. Each month, we select paintings, prints, and sculptures in diverse styles from all over the world to offer with accessible estimates. The Warehouse boasts an affordably priced collection that encompasses modern and antique furniture and décor, silver, porcelain, glass, fashion, collectible toys, books, and indigenous arts.

The Asian Art Department presents a meticulously curated collection in our June Warehouse auction, including Japanese woodblock prints, ceramics, folding screens, and various decorative pieces. The Maritime Sale

This April, Clars is hosting a Maritime Sale that will include a multitude of art and décor from celebrated nautical interior designer, Meri Jaye as well as memorabilia and artifacts from the historic marine collectibles shop, Frank’s Fisherman, a San Francisco landmark that was converted from a fishing supplier in the 1970s.

This sprawling collection includes fine paintings from the Atlantic to the Pacific, stunningly crafted model ships, authentic relics from functioning boats, and much more that is sure to draw the enthusiasm of marine collectors. This auction also extends beyond these two extraordinary collections. Additional estates and collections, including vintage fixtures from the beloved San Francisco landmark Playland at the Beach, will also be offered.

Furniture & Decorative Arts

Our April 19th auction features a remarkable collection from the estate of Harvey Clar, the gallery’s founder. Mr. Clar’s collection includes exquisite Lalique pieces, fine porcelain, marble, and bronze sculptures. The estate of Meri Jaye of Nob Hill, San Francisco, also contributes to this sale. Her collection boasts a coveted 1780 edition of Don Quixote, printed by Don Joaquin Ibarra, and a deluxe copy edition of Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe, signed by illustrator Arthur Rackham.

The auction further presents a selection of indigenous art from other estates, including Native American beadwork, Hopi kachinas, and Inuit figures. Rounding out this diverse auction is a collection of antique furniture in Regency and Georgian periods, including miniature cabinets, and brass-bound writing boxes.

Fine Art

This month at Clars, we are pleased to present a number of works by well-known and up-and-coming artists. Featured in our April sale is a bronze sculpture by German-born American sculptor, Adolph Alexander Weinman. Weinman received his arts education at Cooper Union and later at the Art Students League of New York, after which he became a member of the National Sculpture Society and served as its president. He is most known for his architectural sculpture, as well as portrayals of American presidents. His most acclaimed works include a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Kentucky State Capitol, the Fountain of the Centaurs at the Missouri State Capitol, his work on Pennsylvania Station in New York, and the pediments of the National Archive Building and the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. The piece in our April sale is a nude female figure dancing with a hoop, set atop a marble base. The sculpture masterfully evokes movement and displays the influence of the Art Deco style that was flourishing in 1922 when the sculpture was cast.

A second highlight in our sale is a 1915 edition of volume ten of The North American Indian, a book and portfolio by American photographer, Edward Sheriff Curtis. Curtis is widely known for his depictions of the American West and Native American people, including important figures like Geronimo, Princess Angeline, and Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. In 1906, financier J.P. Morgan commissioned Curtis to produce the 20-volume series containing many of his photographs of the Native American peoples across the country. Volume 10 is centered on the Kwakiutl people of the Pacific Northwest, mainly based in British Columbia, Canada. The volume in our April sale contained 74 sepia-toned photogravure plates and is out of an edition of 500.

Another highlight is an oil on canvas painting by Icelandic-American artist, Louisa Matthiasdottir. Born in Reykjavik, Matthiasdottir studied art in Denmark and Paris before moving to New York City in the 1940s. She studied there under Hans Hoffmann and Robert De Nico, Sr., and exhibited often in New York and other major east coast cities. She is known for her landscapes and cityscapes depicting Iceland, with a focus on the light, agriculture, and colorful architecture of the towns. Her work is included in collections at the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Reykjavik Art Museum.

Along with these exciting items, we will also present a large oil on canvas painting by Deladier Almeida, a painting by Karl Albert Buehr, sculptures by Beniamino Bufano, a mixed media piece by Sam Gilliam, and much more.

Asian Art

A standout piece from the April 19th auction is a hanging scroll calligraphy by Yu Youren, a master revered for his exceptional skill in calligraphy — particularly in cursive script. Yu Youren is celebrated for pioneering the “Standard Cursive Script,” earning him accolades as the “Contemporary Sage of Cursive” and “Modern Saint of Calligraphy.” This calligraphy came from the collection of Huang Siufeng (1892–1975), who held a prominent position at the Central Bank of China during the late 1930s. It was acquired at auction in Seattle where Huang Siufeng lived for many years.

Accompanying this masterpiece is a Chinese famille rose blue ground bowl, with a blue background and adorned with bird and floral motifs. It also features a dragon in the interior. This exquisite piece, featuring the Guangxu six-character mark, showcases the refined porcelain artistry of the late Qing dynasty period.

Next is a Japanese six-panel folding screen, illustrating morning glories, measuring 36″ high by 102″ wide. This screen exemplifies the Japanese aesthetic of capturing the fleeting beauty of nature, rendered in delicate detail and vibrant hues.

Completing our highlights is a Chinese landscape painting — executed in the splashed color technique — attributed to Zhang Daqian. This painting showcases Zhang Daqian’s mastery of ink and color on paper. Known for his innovative splashed ink technique, Zhang Daqian’s work is a bridge between traditional Chinese landscapes and modern abstract expression. This work is inscribed, dated, and adorned with two seals.

Fine Jewelry & Timepieces

The Fine Jewelry & Timepiece department is excited to offer a selection of diamond, colored gemstone, and gold jewelry in the upcoming April 19th sale. This sale features a variety of wardrobe staples to build up the foundation of your jewelry collection at accessible price points. Highlights include an opal, ruby, and gold pendant brooch, estimated at $2,000–$3,000; a pair of diamond and 14k gold earrings, estimated at $1,500–$2,500; and a gold link bracelet, estimated at $500–$700.

Fine Art

In the realm of fine art, our May auction promises a captivating array of works. One stand out piece is an oil on board painting by French Barbizon School artist, Félix Ziem. Born in the wine capital of Burgundy in 1821, Ziem originally set his sights on a career in architecture and studied at L’École des Beaux-Arts before developing his painting hobby into a full-time practice. Ziem first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1849 and traveled throughout Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, taking inspiration from scenery in Venice, Constantinople, Egypt, and the French Riviera. Ziem was commercially successful during his lifetime and was also known to mentor younger artists. The painting in our sale this month is titled Étude Sur les Bord de la Méditerranée, and depicts a row of buildings on a cliffside overlooking the ocean, dotted with sparse vegetation under a blue sky. It was shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1925 and is a fine example of Ziem’s affinity for seaside scenes.

A second work featured this month is a bronze sculpture by American sculptor, Richard Howard Hunt. Hunt was born in Chicago in 1935 and was interested in the arts from an early age, attending operas with his mother and working with clay in a makeshift studio in the basement of his family’s home. While studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, Hunt explored assemblage with found objects, mixing organic and industrial materials to create expressionistic and surreal sculptures. His piece Arachne was bought by the Museum of Modern Art while Hunt was a junior in college. Hunt was inspired by social issues during his early career — he was greatly affected by attending the funeral of Emmett Till and the Civil Rights movement, participating in desegregation protests during the 1960s. Hunt frequently experimented with welding, using materials from junkyards to form figural and abstract works. Hunt was extremely influential and admired during his decades-long career, being the first African American artist to to serve on the National Council on the Arts and having a sculpture commissioned by President Barack Obama in 2022. The bronze sculpture in this month’s auction is an abstract, tree-like form with horn-like appendages and Hunt’s signature flowing lines, made of bronze with a burnished golden sheen.

A third highlight this month is a collection of works on paper by American caricaturist, Albert Hirschfeld. Hirschfeld is known for his work on Broadway playbills, contributions to The New York Times and other major publications, and Hollywood studio art direction. The exclusive collection of works at Clars this month includes original gouache paintings used in prominent magazines, such as an illustration of Harry Truman that was featured on the cover of Colliers Magazine in 1954, a caricature of Dwight Eisenhower used for the cover of American Mercury Magazine in 1945, and a satirical painting of Joseph McCarthy that graced the cover of Colliers Magazine in 1950. A number of pen and ink drawings are featured, including a portrait of comedian Fred Allen and a cast portrait from the 1959 Broadway production of Much Ado About Nothing, as well as several lithographs depicting recognizable pop culture figures.

In the Asian Art department, two captivating highlights await eager collectors. One of these highlights is a grand Chinese embroidered panel, traditionally symbolizing birthday celebrations, which intricately showcases dragon motifs and auspicious symbols — reflecting the richness of Chinese cultural heritage.

The other highlight is a finely carved Chinese bamboo figure of Shoulao, embodying the deity of longevity, radiates wisdom and prosperity, making it a cherished addition to any discerning collector’s repertoire.
