One of the headline lots is a seasonally fitting screenprint by Pop Art icon Andy Warhol, titled The Witch (1981), featuring American actress Margaret Hamilton in her role as the Wicked Witch of the West from the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. Part of Warhol’s Myths series, this screenprint embodies the artist’s fascination with American pop culture icons, with other works in the series depicting figures like Superman, Dracula, and Santa Claus. Though created nearly twenty years after his famed 1960s portraits, The Witch recalls the vibrant neon palette and strong visual contrasts of Warhol’s earlier pieces, particularly Marilyn Diptych. The addition of hand-drawn lines and the use of Warhol’s own photography make this piece a dynamic and layered work, carrying an estimate of $30,000–$50,000.

Hank Risan’s musical instrument collection included more than 750 examples of fine 19th and 20th century acoustic instruments. On October 17th, we are happy to offer over 50 of these magnificent guitars and mandolins.

Risan owns an 1835 Martin 2½-17 guitar that is believed to have accompanied Mark Twain (born Samuel Clemens) throughout his life. During a 1999 appearance on National Public Radio’s (NPR) All Things Considered program, Risan played an arrangement of the Stephen Foster classic, Old Susannah, on the Twain guitar.

In 2014, Risan placed 265 of his classic guitars on the block with boutique auction house Guernsey’s in New York. The auction was called The Artistry of the Guitar. However, many of the guitars, including the Martin — which was ultimately purchased by The Martin Guitar Company — did not reach their pre-auction estimates or reserves.

In our September 20th auction, many jazz items and ephemera caught bidders’ attention. On November 21st we are excited to present Session II of the collection.

Included in Session II is an of an extensive collection of early jazz items, including an Ella Fitzgerald signed recording agreement with Clef Records, a rare handwritten music sheet by Charlie Christian, a Billie Holiday signed contract to perform at the Loop Lounge in Cleveland, 1956, a Surrogates Court Order related to the estate of Billie Holiday, and a collection of Billie Holiday original orchestral arrangement sheets. Asian Art

Clars’ Asian Art department will present a distinguished collection of Chinese works of art, with highlights including three Chinese famille rose and blue-and-white “lotus” bowls — two bearing Guangxu marks and one with a Xuantong mark, all of the period. The Xuantong reign (1909–1911), under the last emperor Puyi, represents the final chapter of China’s Qing Dynasty. These bowls are finely potted with flared rims and deep rounded sides, decorated with underglaze blue lotus scrolls on the interiors and vibrant famille rose lotus pond scenes on the exteriors. Their refined enamels and luminous cobalt blue glazes exemplify the technical sophistication of the late Qing imperial kilns.

Also featured is a pair of Chinese clair-de-lune glazed covered weiqi jars, prized for their balanced proportions and rich sky-blue glaze. Traditionally used to store game pieces for Go, these jars symbolize literati ideals of intellect and aesthetic refinement. Their exteriors are enhanced with pink-enameled lotus scrolls, blending cultural symbolism with striking visual appeal.

One of the standout offerings is an oil on canvas by Edward Mitchell Bannister (American/Canadian, 1828–1901), a pioneering African American artist. Born in New Brunswick and active in Boston and Providence, Bannister rose to prominence despite the challenges of racial discrimination. His serene 1893 landscape — depicting a marshy pond beneath a dappled gray sky — reflects his signature pastoral style. The work is estimated at $10,000–$15,000, following the recent success of a Bannister painting sold at Clars in July for $30,720.

Also featured is an oil on canvas by Paris-born artist Marcel Dyf (1899–1985), a post-Impressionist painter whose work reflects the influence of Renoir and Manet. The painting, Une Vue du Port de Cannes, captures boats docked along the southern French harbor beneath an overcast sky and is estimated at $3,000–$5,000.

Antique Persian Bidjar Carpet

Bidjar rugs, woven in northwest Iran, are famed for their dense structure and durability, often referred to as the “iron carpets of Persia.” This antique example displays a rich, jewel-toned palette and classical geometric motifs, balancing tribal tradition with refined technique. Such carpets were long favored in European interiors for their resilience and grandeur.

William Moorcroft

British potter William Moorcroft (1872–1945) earned international acclaim for his hand-decorated art pottery, characterized by deep glazes and naturalistic themes. His flambé pieces, like this undersea-themed vase, utilize complex kiln chemistry to achieve glowing, unpredictable surface effects — no two glazes are alike. Moorcroft’s work was embraced by collectors and royalty alike, and he remains one of the most collected ceramicists of the early 20th century.

Augustin Heyne

A rare and exquisitely preserved tankard by Augustin Heyne, a master silversmith from Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), this work exemplifies the lavish artistry of early Baroque German metalwork. Florentine Cassone

The cassone, or marriage chest, was one of the most important furnishings in the Italian Renaissance home. Commissioned by wealthy families, they were often adorned with allegorical scenes, coats of arms, and lavish ornamentation. This example, dating to the late Gothic period in Florence, is notable for its early painted decoration and architectural form, marking it as both utilitarian and symbolic. Very few cassoni from this early period survive outside major museum collections, making this piece a rare and culturally significant offering.

Leading the sale is an oil on canvas by Edmund Osthaus (German-American, 1858–1928), depicting three setters in a lush autumn landscape. Also on offer is a tranquil oil landscape by Albert Bierstadt (German-American, 1830–1902), known for his luminous and romantic views of the American West. On June 19th, Clars is proud to present the Estate of Eddi Van Auken at our Fine Curiosities Auction. Eddi was a San Francisco Bay Area antique historian, collector, artist, and author who spent over 30 years acquiring, researching, and cataloguing antique walking sticks from around the world.

It was actually an accident in her home that ignited her foray into walking sticks: she fell down the stairs, fractured her tailbone, and needed a cane to walk. Pharmacy canes wouldn’t suffice — and she thought, surely there had to be other, more artistic options. And thus, a collection of unparalleled breadth and quality was born — and continued to grow, long after her injury healed.

Eddi started life as “Ethel Sady,” named for a beloved grandmother and then subsequently renamed Eddi by college friends who felt the name better suited her gorgeous, sassy, and brilliant personality. Despite her petite 5’4″ frame, she lit up any room with her vibrant presence, catching the attention of Wendell “Van” Van Auken, whom she married at 19 (he was 21) before they drove west in a green Corvette to California.

In the Bay Area, Eddi fully developed her extraordinary gift for finding beauty in the everyday and transforming the mundane into the magnificent, designing a family home that showcased her impeccable taste through unexpected combinations of chic, edgy, whimsical, and vintage pieces. As her collection of antique walking sticks grew, she authored a respected compendium on walking sticks titled Vertical Art and was working on a second book, Masterpieces, when she passed away. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Eddi was deeply committed to empowering women across all fields and supported initiatives promoting early lung cancer detection. She had a way of making everyone feel welcome, seen, and appreciated. Eddi passed away peacefully in August 2024, at age 77 from complications arising from metastatic lung cancer, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant as her personality.
