Highly Select Property from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, to be offered at Clars on April 23rd

Oakland, CA, 22 & 23 – April 2017 – Clars Auction Gallery will present the third installment of select property from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, on Sunday, April 23rd at their Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry/Timepieces and Asian Art Auction. Strong global interest in the MET collection presented in their February and March sales surpassed all expectations realizing over $350,000. This collection is being deaccessed to benefit the MET Museum’s acquisition fund.

Highlighting the MET collection in April will be a group of five 17th century Portuguese walnut embossed chairs with later elements that is estimated at $4,000 – $6,000. Also to be offered are several pieces of period furniture including an English Chippendale mahogany chair, circa 1760-1775, a George III inlaid mahogany Pembroke table, late 18th century, and an early 18th century Italian-Roman giltwood console table.

Furniture highlights at this sale will also include a number of Aesthetic Movement pieces and a Victorian Neo-Grec mirror back cabinet, New York circa 1870.

A collection of furniture designed by iconic postmodern architect Michael Graves (American, 1934-2015) will be featured at this sale. The furnishings come from the Cedar Gables residence he designed in Minnetonka, MN in 1998. This single owner collection will feature furniture pieces from the home, including a Michael Graves custom designed cabinet, executed in tiger maple veneer as well as a selection of other custom designed furnishings from the residence.

And for those special collectors vying for the finest in extraordinary “horse transportation,” a highlight will be an Allan Hershell “Sebastian” carousel horse, circa 1920. For those who desire more horses under the hood, also to be offered also to be offered will be a 2013 Mercedes Benz convertible E350, estimated at $25,000-35,000, and a 2013 Mini Cooper S Convertible, 6 speed Stick shift, 10,200 original miles, valued at $14,000-16,000.

Jewelry & Timepieces
The jewelry and timepieces offerings will be quite exceptional this month, particularly for the ladies.  In timepieces, two offerings of note are a Patek Philippe Ellipse 18k gold wristwatch that will be offered with an estimate of $3,000 – 5,000 and a Lady’s Rolex Datejust diamond and stainless steel wristwatch, Ref. 79174.

In jewelry, a stunning 18k gold ring featuring a round brilliant-cut diamond (2.80 ct) surrounded by 24 full cut yellow diamonds is expected to achieve $9,000 – 13,000. A sleek elegant 18k gold ring featuring a 16 ct emerald-cut tanzanite stone accented by two triangle-cut diamonds will be offered for $7,000 – 10,000.

Asian Art and Antiques

bodhisattva, 6.5″This impressive April sale will be rounded out by select offerings of Asian art and antiques such as a selection of Chinese jade and hardstone carvings, including a jadeite carving with a bodhisattva. An assortment of Chinese export hardwood furniture will also be offered.

In Japanese offerings will be a selection of wooden netsuke and inro and a Japanese cloisonné enameled hexagonal vase, Meiji period. And from Thailand, a pair of Thai gilt bronze 18th/19th century Buddhist monks, the standing figures in ornate robes with dense scroll patterns and mirror inlay, will be offered.
