Highlights include a monumental mixed-media canvas by Abstract Expressionist Conrad Marca- Relli, Untitled (circa 1970s), estimated at $15,000–$20,000; Richard Diebenkorn’s vibrant aquatint with drypoint, Folsom Street Variations III (Primaries) (1986), estimated at $12,000–$18,000; and Richard Pettibone’s incisive Pop Art reinterpretation, Andy Warhol Brillo Box (1964) (1967), also estimated at $12,000–$18,000. Additional highlights include California Impressionist works by Granville Redmond and Charles P. Reiffel, as well as notable works by Ellsworth Kelly, Victor Vasarely, Edward S. Curtis, Anthony Quinn, and John James Audubon. Together, these works underscore the breadth and quality of the auction, offering collectors opportunities across multiple movements, media, and price points.

Richard Diebenkorn (American, 1922–1993), Folsom Street Variations III (Primaries), 1986, aquatint with drypoint, 12″ x 26″. Estimate: $12,000–$18,000 (1 of 2 to be offered)

Estimate: $12,000–$18,000 (1 of 2 to be offered)

Featured in the auction is Richard Pettibone (American, 1938–2024), a pivotal conceptual Pop artist known for re-creating iconic works of his contemporaries in miniature. Drawing from the Dada tradition of Marcel Duchamp, Pettibone appropriated widely recognized images — such as Andy Warhol’s Marilyn screenprints and Roy Lichtenstein’s comic-strip paintings — in works he described as both homage and critique. His Andy Warhol Brillo Box (1964), created in 1967 after Warhol’s famed facsimile boxes, exemplifies Pettibone’s recursive approach to mass-produced imagery, raising enduring questions about authorship, value, and consumer culture in postwar American art.

Richard Pettibone (American, 1938–2024), Andy Warhol Brillo Box (1964), 1967, silkscreen ink on canvas, 7.5″ x 7.25″. Estimate: $12,000–$18,000

Another major focus of the auction is an extensive group of paintings by Margaret Keane (American, 1927–2022), spanning the early 1960s. Keane is internationally renowned for her iconic depictions of wide-eyed figures and for her remarkable personal and artistic story. During her marriage, her former husband Walter Keane falsely claimed authorship of her work, a claim later disproven in a landmark courtroom “paint-off” following their divorce. Keane was ultimately recognized as the true creator of the famed “Big Eyes” paintings. Her influence extends across fine art and popular culture, and her life inspired the 2014 film Big Eyes, directed by Tim Burton and starring Amy Adams. Four paintings by Keane are offered in the February auction, with estimates ranging from $6,000–$9,000 to $10,000–$15,000.

Clars’ Important Holiday Fine Art Auction on December 18th presents an exceptional selection of artworks by celebrated artists working across a wide range of periods and styles.

Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b.1926), Still Life with the Ugly Hockney Vase #2, 2004–2005, oil on canvas, 44.5″ x 48″Estimate: $150,000–$200,000
Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b.1926), Still Life with the Ugly Hockney Vase #2, 2004–2005, oil on canvas, 44.5″ x 48″
Estimate: $150,000–$200,000

Among the premier highlights is an oil on canvas by Bay Area favorite, Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b. 1926), an artist with whom Clars has consistently achieved strong results. Staprans is renowned for his vivid palette and distinctive use of line — qualities that are fully evident in Still Life with the Ugly Hockney Vase #2. The off-white vase rests on a similarly colored surface set against a striking red ground, while delicate lines in orange, violet, and sky blue trace the object’s edges and heighten its dimensionality. Selected for the cover of the 2006 exhibition catalog for Staprans’ retrospective at the Latvian National Museum, the painting exemplifies the artist’s ability to reinvigorate traditional still-life subjects through bold color and decisive brushwork. This work is estimated at $150,000–$200,000.

Mark Bradford (American, b. 1961), Untitled (Abstract), paper and acrylic on canvas, 20″ x 24″.Estimate: $20,000–$30,000
Mark Bradford (American, b. 1961), Untitled (Abstract), paper and acrylic on canvas, 20″ x 24″.
Estimate: $20,000–$30,000

Another major feature of the December sale is a mixed-media work on canvas by Los Angeles based artist Mark Bradford (American, b. 1961). Bradford’s practice is deeply informed by his upbringing in South Los Angeles and by his explorations of race, gender, and identity — as well as the influence of his mother’s hair salon — where he worked after high school. Many of his materials originate in that environment, including hair dye and the end papers used in perm treatments. The December offering, painted in soft green hues, is layered with sheets of end paper in various states of translucency, some singed to a deep brown. The staggered layers create surprising depth and texture across the surface. Bradford’s work is widely admired and held in prominent collections, and he has received national recognition, including his inclusion in Time Magazine’s 2021 list of the most influential people and the National Medal of Arts in 2023. This untitled piece carries an estimate of $20,000–$30,000.

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973), Visage de Femme, 1953, ceramic plate, 15″ x 12.5″.Estimate: $15,000–$20,000
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973), Visage de Femme, 1953, ceramic plate, 15″ x 12.5″.
Estimate: $15,000–$20,000

A further highlight is a ceramic plate by Spanish modernist Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Visage de Femme and dating to 1953 during his collaboration with the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. Picasso’s ceramics remain highly desirable as accessible, yet significant examples of his contributions to twentieth-century art. This piece features the Cubist depiction of a woman’s face, rendered in white, cyan, and blue on a black ground, with a bold white line forming the nose above a slight smile and a beaded necklace. The plate is estimated at $15,000–$20,000.

Granville Redmond (American, 1871–1935), Carmel, 1932, oil on canvas board, 12.25″ x 15.75″.Estimate: $10,000–$15,000

This May 15th, Clars is excited to offer an outstanding oil on canvas painting by Latvian American artist Raimonds Staprans (b. 1926) in our Modern + Contemporary Fine Art Auction.

Upon moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1950s, Staprans was quickly adopted by the art community in his chosen home and remains one of the foremost representatives of post-war California painting nationwide. Staprans is known for his large swaths of bright color, often playing with natural light and the perception of shape and texture, and his understated treatment of subject.

Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b. 1926), Blue Boats, 1990, oil on canvas, 44" x 48".Sold: $187,500

Sold: $187,500

Current trends in the market show that the highly saturated paintings that Staprans perfected in the late 1980s and 1990s are increasingly popular with collectors. Clars has been successful with several of these pieces in the last five years, including a 1987 oil on canvas titled, Still Life with Red Piano Stool, which sold well over its estimate at $147,600 in 2020, and Blue Boats, a 1990 painting that sold for $187,500 in 2022. Still life depictions of food are among the most recognizable of Staprans’ motifs. Staprans’ highest record price was realized in 2023 for a 1995 still life depicting oranges, done in a vibrantly warm palette that is strikingly similar to the piece up for auction at Clars this May.

The scene takes place in a space unmarked by identifying objects, furnished with a stool-like drop-leaf table. The table’s edges and sides are traced with prismatic colors in a manner that leaves the viewer questioning if the color is painted on the posts and boards, or if the unseen sun is playing tricks on our eyes. The top of the table appears to be doused with direct sunlight, bright white and glowing against the orange background. To the viewer’s right, the sides of the table’s legs are cast in a sunset glow the same tangerine shade as the background. Sitting atop the table is a peeled apple, its sides angled and smoothed with a paring knife. The fruit casts a half-moon shadow that points toward the open leaf of the table and is echoed on each stretcher below.

Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b. 1926), The Mid Summer Drop-Leaf Table, 1993, oil on canvas, 48″ x 42″.Estimate: $60,000–$90,000
To be offered May 15th: Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b. 1926), The Mid Summer Drop-Leaf Table, 1993, oil on canvas, 48″ x 42″.
Sold: $189,000

This work, titled The Mid Summer Drop-Leaf Table (estimated at $60,000–$90,000), showcases Staprans’ skill in using color to portray light, perspective, and a specific atmosphere. The tones chosen in this composition evoke the warmth of the summer months, and the slant of the dazzling sunshine on the table and fruit leave us wondering if this is the end of a late-evening garden party, where a table full of fresh fruit has dwindled to a lone apple and the leaves are dropped one by one. This outstanding example of Staprans’ later work is a celebration of color and light, an ode to atmosphere, and will be a significant addition to any collection.
