Very Rare Chinese Automaton Triple Fusee Bracket Clock Expected to Fetch Over $1 Million at Clars June 2016 Sale – Plus Important Huanghuali Furniture from the Gerber Estate

Chinese_automatonOakland, CA, 18 and 19 – June 2016 – On Sunday, June 19th, Clars Auction Gallery will bring to market an very rare and beautiful Chinese AutomatonTriple Fusee Bracket Clock that has been conservatively estimated to achieve $800,000 to $1.2 million. “The market for these exceptional works has never been stronger and we are very honored to represent this incredible example which comes to the sale from an advanced clock collection in the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Deric Torres, Vice President of Decorative Arts & Furnishings. The clock measures 36 inches tall and the gilt bronze case is embellished with elegant filigree mounts. Mythical figures adorn the corners as do seashell handles and jeweled floral mounts. The porcelain dial measures 6” with a mirror plate above. The animation is extraordinary with animated swimming ducks on the hour and a large spinning pinwheel surrounded by 10 smaller pinwheels topped by a jeweled teardrop finish the very top of this work of art. This clock will be offered as part of Clars June 2016 Fine Art, Decorative Arts & Furnishings, Jewelry & Timepieces and Asian Art and Antiques.

The June event will also showcase the continuation of the important collection of Chinese huanghuali furniture from the Dr. Bernard C. Gerber Estate of South Dakota. Clars experienced global bidding and buying when they offered the first part of the collection in 2014.

huang_table_chairsAmong the pieces to be offered in this sale include a huanghuali rectangular dining table and six side chairs that will be offered for $70,000-100,000. A pair of armchairs are carved with a chilong on the narrow back splat and are expected to achieve $20,000-40,000. A rounded-corner cabinet is estimated at $30,000-50,000 and a large altar table table ‘qiao tou an’ that is carved with dragons on the apron, will be also be offered for $ 30,000-50,000. Among the other pieces from the Gerber collection will be Himalayan ritual vessels, a Chinese saddle, stirrups and bronze blades.

Furthering the important Asian category will be offerings from a prominent Chinese Republic period official and scholar.  One of the highlights from this collection will be a Chinese soapstone seal of Yu Youren (Chinese, 1879-1964), the base of the seal carved ‘Guanzhong Yu shi’, the side carved ‘[Yang] Qianli’ and cyclical year wuwu first month (corresponding to 1918), that is estimated to achieve $10,000-15,000.  In addition, Clars will be offering a selection of Chinese ceramics including monochromes, underglazed blue and enameled porcelain.

aquamarine_necklaceCarrying no further description than simply irresistible will be three offerings of note by the Jewelry and Timepieces category. A most elegant white gold necklace is centered by a 16.20 cts. aquamarine that is both surrounded and the chain laden with 11 cts of diamonds. This piece will be offered for $10,000 – 15,000. If sapphires are more to your liking, an 8 ct sapphire, diamond and platinum ring can be yours for between $20,000 – 40,000. And for the gentlemen, a rare and fine circa 1964/1965 Rolex Cosmograph wristwatch, ref. 6239, accompanied by original papers, will be offered for $15,000 – 20,000.
